I played it and liked it...but not 49.99 liked it. A solid 19.99 game.

I say $30 is fair too. Lotsa fun for a mindless shooter. Fun to co-op as well. Ash and I have been playing for about a month....

Cool for multi-player with friends.

I enjoyed it, played with Ash and Ninja... but they were the only draw to the game for me besides the stylized graphics, which were enjoyable

It's on sale again. 30% off I think?

so how does it work in regards to forming a team?
is it like a lobby system ala L4D?

You can host a public or private game, or join a public game. to play with friends, the person hosting the game can send you an invite through the stupid gamespy interface that is built into the game.

just watched some youtube vids. the art is kinda cool.... but looks slow, boring and redundant.

Ninjahedge

Slow? Not really, and not boring either.

Imagine a more cartooney and more spammy Fallout 3. You do collect a lot of stuff though.

As for people, it is like what Slay said, you look at Steam, see if anyone you know is on. Message them, get their GameSpy callsign, then ask about playing/joining. Once in game they can invite you.....

If it's on sale then definitely pick it up. It's great with friends, and not too bad by yourself if you're bored. The only downside is that it's a console port, so it's somewhat noobified and the menus are horrid.

My son got it for me at Blockbuster for 34 bucks, I cant wait to open it on xmas day so I can play the heck out of it :)

Actually it used the UT engine and if you go to gearbox's forum, there are alot of ini tweaks you can do. I will try and find it, but there is even a tweak to make the game think there is more than 1 player if you are playing single player.

If you want a crappy console port game, buy Resident Evil 5. I did when it was 50% off, and I hate the control setup and the game play!!

If you find this I'd love to have it, single player is just way too easy. I've found some ini tweaks but I couldn't get them to work (neither could some of my friends).

Sp is only easy if you over-farm. If you go linear, the guys are impossibly difficult for your level...

But what's the fun in that? ;)

I believe this is the link that I bookmarked! But right now, it looks like gearbox's forum is down!

Ok I love this game. Its fun and challenging. I like the way the missions keep you moving, and all the swag from killing is a great incentive.

how many stupid ports are there to forward on here?
I've never seen a game so inept for online gameplay.

Is there even an online community for this game?
I cant connect to any server despite all of the ports forwarded and firewalls turned off. Im very close to simply asking for a refund.

edit:

**** it.
asking for a refund. im not forcing myself to play a game that is DOA just because I have a monster rig now. Killing floor has more promise and that crap is dated. But at least you can connect to servers without port forwarding.

The ones I had to forward:

7777 (TCP/UDP)
28900 (TCP)
27900 (UDP)
28910 (TCP)

www.Shokazulu.com Shok is part of the Gearbox team that developed the game. He has great info on the port forwarding and the tweaks to get it running perfect.

im sorry... but how can i possibly give a game any credit when they make you open 5 ports on your router when most other games dont AND you need 3rd party apps because they didnt include any advanced graphic options. (AA, triple buffering, etc)

And I thought that nothing was worse than the L4D lobby system. But this game actually makes L4D lobbys look like a huge success!

I had problems with the game too - I bought the four pack with a few friends and we ended up having to use Hamachi (a free VPN program) for our games.

If you know who you are playing with you can avoid all the port forwarding if everyone loads Hamachi. Maybe there are four from MyU that want to start a party? (you don't have to stick with the same people, but I think it is best to since otherwise your quest logs end up different)

But yes, sloppiest net programming I have seen in a game in a long time! :(

um... im pretty damned sure I used a 4 letter word or 2.

You are just making up your own quotes now!

well, this game lead me to realize that the ATI control center is not working. I was going to force AA and the like instead of using a 3rd party software like is suggested in other threads, and now gave myself the job of trying to figure out why CCC isnt working.

good thing i have loads of time here at work since everyone is on vaca.

Man, I feel like a test subject for Win 7 lately.

I was using Hamachi also, and gave up on it. Haven't quite figured it out I guess.

I'd be open to a few games.

I didn't have to forward any ports for UT3, don't know why Borderlands is so much more trouble (same engine).

Even using Hamachi I had some problems - I was never able to host "private" games, I always had to host them as "public" for people to be able to connect. I would host them as public and invite the players directly as if it were private, that plus Hamachi was the combination that made it work for us.

It is definitely quirky as well. Sometimes no one could connect to my hosted games and I would just re-host and it would work without any other changes.

(note that I have not played since the patch, I am not sure if they fixed any of these problems)

I am not using any 3rd party program to host a game, I just PF the 5 ports needed and it works just fine.

The main issue with Borderlands is that it is programmed by lazy console programmers and ported over to the PC. One of the main complaints the PC community is having is that they are being treated as 2nd class citizens. Hell the 2nd DLC was announced before the 1st was released for the PC.

Even with all of the bugs, all of my close friends are getting our $33 worth from the game.

But I think I will hold off from buying anymore gearbox games, until I read a month or two worth of message board comments on the game. ;)

One thing, after playing the expansion w/ash, don't wast the cash.

It has plenty of Halloween puns, but it just is not much fun.

Oddly enough, some of the fun is joining a guy a few levels ahead of you and running with them. You can see your level jumping up.

Some fun spots were Old Haven and that winter pass (you will know it when you get to it). Also, there is one bug-level area in the desert that just keeps spawning them for 10 minutes or so, lotsa carnage! ;)

I got this game as a Christmas present and I've been addicted ever since! That analogy of FO3 with more action is pretty spot on. It has sucked hours out of my holiday time! Then again, the weather's been kinda crappy so I don't feel too guilty. :D

The menus definitely could use some help, but I actually find them easier to nav than the ones in FO3. I've only been playing SP so far and it's been fun and I actually like the graphics.

The only real complaints I have about the game are things like I wish it was easier to know where you were supposed to go for different missions since not all the descriptions aren't very , well, descriptive! :) I guess it's the result of being ported, but I really hate it when they don't allow you to save on demand. Other than that, so far I really like it. Oh, maybe someone here would know the answer to a goofy question. Let's say you have two weapons to pick from, same weapon type. You are Level 20. Is it better to use weapon A that is a Level 20 Damage 200 or is it better to use weapon B that is Level 15 Damage 300? It seems like using the higher level weapon does better despite the lower damage rating, which seems odd.

i will try to answer a few things

press M for map and you need to go to the diamond icon. You dont even have to read the description of the mission.

Online play sucks unless someone has a fat pipe and they are close in level.

Weapons... it depends. They are all modded, some with elements. The faster shooter with quick reload time might be weaker then the heavy hitter and slow reload.

I try to stick with element damaging weapons due to the extra damage they dish out

Ninjahedge

What we have found, in general, works best is simple.

More damage = Better. Also, look on the Wiki page to see what special comments (Pele for example) mean better results.

I found that having less damage, but a 4x flame on my sniper rifle was better than having more shot power.

Also, accuracy matters, as well as mag capacity.

Just remember, if you are going to play with other people, try and coordinate the abilities. No use in getting double up on things like shot capacity or have a team full of healers.....

The waypoint diamond actually pisses me off to no end. It is not exactly where the objective is located, it is semi-near (in some cases it is no where near). For example, I was running around on one mission where I had to shutdown four smoke signals and it took me a while to figure out that the waypoint that was showing up in the middle of the whole map was just a 'yup, you're on the right map' waypoint. But what I really meant by making it easier to know where you need to go is that beside the waypoint being 'off' is that after I complete a mission, I sometimes can't remember where I have to go to collect. So, what I end up doing is using the New-U stations and hopping around from location to location looking at the map to see if the waypoint is there or if it is marked on another transition point.

I'll have to read through the wiki, or parts of it, cause there are sooooooooo many combinations of weapons and armor and shields and etc...etc...etc... Which is both a blessing and curse. Tons of variables making for more interesting gameplay, but sometimes I get hung up on not wanting to get rid of one thing or another. Fun stuff though!

:D

I have put about 40 hours into this. This game is video crack :) New years day I got up with a hangover and still put in 12 hours...

My wife was my warden on this game, and constantly let me know when I had been playing..... ;)

Zaph, the thing about the WPs that annoyed me was that SOMETIMES they were specific, sometimes they weren't. Specifically, any "build this" one usually just put a diamond in the middle of a location and left it at that, and then your next mission would put a diamond on a glowing green object you needed to touch/grab/activate/move/fornacate with......

It would have been better to be the same on all rather than mixed, but once you knew, it was more an annoyance than anything else....

wow.. talk about a game with no restrictions.
there is a program out there that lets you mod anything in the game.
And since you host your own games for online play, the weapons/items/stats become "legit"

edit:

Anyone want to go online later and I will drop a 1000% over charged super fast recharge/super fast health regen shield? lol

Ninjahedge
01-04-2010, 06:59 PM
Um, you can't go TOO uber, but the thing is, you CAN make a "rainbow special", where your weapon spewes random elemental effects. Very powerful.

But don't ruin the fun for yourself. Seriously, play it once strait thru with someone, then go tinkering, otherwise it ruins half the fun!

dragonash
01-04-2010, 10:58 PM
yeah, i dont see th point of making uber crap and ruining the game...

the online experience already blows

Ninjahedge
01-05-2010, 05:31 PM
The experience does not blow, just the interface.

I was not able to connect to... Slayer I think, but I could connect to everyone else no problem (and they could connect to others as well). No rhyme or reason.

dragonash
01-05-2010, 05:59 PM
ok, i should probably clarify a bit

Maybe its more about the "getting to the online experience" that blows.
Aside from the port issues, there are literally no servers out there.

The ones that are online arent configured properly, so you cant connect.
If you CAN connect to one, the levels are so lopsided that it ruins the experience OR the person doesnt understand that 768k up cant support 3 other people. ;p
