Ok, long story short.

We had workers in our apartment and I think they stole some wii games.
I'm looking into burning and playing my wii games now (backup purposes) and homebrew looks like the way to do it.

However it IS leaving me a little confused and I dont want to brick my system.
Anyone have experience modding your Wii without a chip?

i thought you need a mobchip and it's always a possibility to brick it if you ever play official game disc.

Yea its complex, I use a usb loader to play from my WD hard drive. No mod chip is needed.

Loading from a HD is also faster than loading from a dvd

What is your firmware version? It's going to be in the top right of your system menu.

I'm doing a mobo swap today so I won't have answers too quick for ya.

well, i did the first part... and i think i did it the right way. but i cant get my game to load. I didnt use a verbatim DVD. I think i will run the second portion of the patch to enable some other options and then use the recommended DVD types too.

looks like it worked. I used a memorex DVD and it loaded the new sports resort.
Although the load times seem a tad longer than normal. Could be the type of DVD.

OAK - what did you use to do the loader?

As far as I know all versions can be soft modded.

I can't watch the video at the moment, but there are several ways to do this. Dunno what loader your using as there are many. I'm using USB loader GX, and don't use disks at all.

It literaly took me ~20 hours of research before I took the project on. I had a bran new Wii and was very cautious of screwing it up.

My setup:
system menu 3.4u
2 GD SD card
250 GB Western Digital HD

Steps I took:
-Disabled Wii conect24 (to prevent updates)
-Used bannerbomb to run hackmii to install: HomeBrew channel 1.0.5, Bootmii, and DVDx.
-Create a backup with bootmii
-DL'ed: ISO15-64-v257.wad, ISO15-64-v266.wad, and ISO36-64-v3094.wad with NUS downloader
-Used Trucha Bug Restorer to revert iso36 to a older version
-Dl'ed IOS38 v3610 with NUS downloader
-Installed cIOS38 rev 14 by waninkoko in HomeBrew
-Put USB loader GX on SD card

dont know if i can switch to it now that i am running homebrew along with the hack to use disc loader for burned games. Also, I have gamma loader as a backup if a disc errors (i guess the settings in it make it run a bit different)

What I *AM* curious about is how to revert your wii to a normal OS again.
Is it just doing an automatic update?

No, updates just add or update older iso's. I don't think it does any check on iso's that nintendo hasn't reserved.

Homebrew channel can be removed by simply removing the channel. It will still leave behind other logs and system files. Who knows if nintendo checks for thease files when a system is returned.

WAD Manager can be used to uninstall any wads that you used to get the loader running. But it is a very risky thing to use. Deleate the wrong wad and you'll be locked out.

You'll see that one of the first things I done was create a system backup with bootmii, just in case I screwed something up the system could be restored.

There is also a way to un-brick a system that may make it virgin. Using a clip on mod chip and an official nintendo backup disk.

If you have an older system Bootmii can be inserted into the boot process and it will be virtualy impossable to brick it without being able to load a backup.

So, my advice is to create a backup now, and a written log of how it's modded so you don't lose track later on.

well, i already did the hacks 2 days ago or so.
so making a backup is out of the question.
but im sure i can download the system disc from a BT file to restore it to virgin quality if need be

edit:

hah!

Seems the new OS deletes everything you have hacked and reverts it all to normal lol

hah!

thats funny.
i wish there was a simple way to just revert everything back to normal. Like a built in system wipe like Dell does lol
