That's a little pricey for beer... or for breakfast! ;)

That would be the laymans perspective. This beer is as strong as three domestic watered down beers though, which makes it a cost effective purchase. And less volume of beer means less trips to the bathroom!

Nah, $12 is still a bit much for a bottle. OTOH, going to a place like Blind Tiger and getting a 12 oz snifter (strait draught) would be awesome.
Most beers run about $6-$8 a glass for the decent stuff these days. Brooklyn Black will run you about $8 a bottle at a bar (10%) and Monster Ale could run you about $10 (barleywine at 10%-12% depending on year and age). There are many MANY more like this.
I would be interested in trying it, but again, $12 a bottle would need me to buy this shizznit on my own at a liquor store ($3 a bottle) and enjoy it at home!

it was $10 a bottle at my favorite pub, not $12. When I drink biggest purpose is usually taste, and enjoying it. i do get drunk, but bang for the buck is not a deciding factor.

That list is confusing because it compares all the different types to each other and I don't really think they are comparable. At least they give you the option to view them by type... :)

i don't go for bang vs. buck either, but the reality is, good tasting beer is usually high in alcohol content.
the brooklyn chocolate stout (i think hedge is referring to above) is amazing, 10%,superb stout with a lot of the notes mentioned on your kentucky stout at the beer advocate site. i just finished my last case earlier this month (yes, i was buying by the case). we can't even get teh Bklyn Monster anymore, i still haven't tried it.
i'm personally a HUGE fan of sweet, hoppy beers, and i've been going totally apesh*t over Lagunitas brewery out in CA. in particular, their Lagunitas Hop Stoopid Ale (beeradvocate: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/220/35738) and (much harder to find) Lagunaitas Undercover Investigation Shut-down Ale (beeradvocate: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/220/30228) are both supremely good, with the latter being so good, there's never a case left at the beer store for me to buy (i'm going back today). at 9.9% alcohol, it will kick your freaking ass and with the flavor, your tastebuds beg for more.
i've been eating up Avery, Victory, He'brew, Rogue and Clipper City and Stone brews for a long time also, but Lagunitas has really taken the cake for me recently.
but yeah - i got made fun of the other day for spending $13 on a 6-pack of beer the other day. Thing is, this six pack is as potent as an entire suit case of Bud. my friend felt like an idiot when we did the math (four beers is equal to almost a 20% bottle of wine!)

I like the Hazelnut Porter myself.
The problem is, there are so few places that offer good unusual beers BY THE CASE here.
I was lucky enough to find a sampler for $25 of a bunch of Sam's. (The Black Lager and Honey Porter are probably my favorites).
Sams Cream Stout is not bad either.
BTW, you are not the only one to get BCS by the case shift! ;) AAMOF, I am trying to keep a few around to let them mature a bit. Them and a few 2007 Monsters (I think).
Finding them is HARD though!
Problem is, the place I buy from has uppd their price by about $5 a case on everything in the past 2-3 years, so it is very hard to see buying a case for $35...
Although Sam Smith's Taddy Porter, Nut Brown or Oatmeal Stout (in the 1p7oz bottles) is a real treat! (12 bottles per case, so it is a short case...).

I'm not big on any sam adams beers these days, I think they did a lot to make microbrews bigger in the us, but there ate so many better beers these days, I almost never buy good beer for home. I always drink it out beceause beer is so much better on tap, and I know if I drink it at home I will be 50 pounds over weight in no time

Unfortunately, it is getting to be $30-$50 (I kid you not) per case for the good stuff.
And I just looked online to see if anyone delivers? The prices suck, and the shipping is more than the price of the beer in most cases!
It is very disheartening.
And ten, Sam has dissapointed me in that they have spent WAY too much $$ on advertising. I think, of all the true beers, they have spent the most.
That comes back directly into over-inflated prices on their stock.
But getting a mixed case for $25 is not a bad deal at all. Although I do remember a time when $20 a case was "premium". (Sam/Bass at $20, Pete's at $18, Saranac at $16, Yueng at $14). Everything went up 75% in 10 years.
BS.
